Menorahs & Chanukiahs

Menorah is the Hebrew name for the seven-branched candelabra originally placed in the sanctuary of the Tabernacle (Ex 31:1-11). In the First Temple built by Solomon there were ten golden menorahs and in the Second Temple there was one. The kohanim (priests) lit the menorah in the Sanctuary every evening and cleaned it out every morning, replacing the wicks and putting fresh olive oil into the cups. The Menorah has since become one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith. At Chanukah, a nine-candle menorah, called a Chanukiah, is lit during the eight day celebration. This commemorates the Miracle of Light when, while cleansing the temple after its desecration by Antiochus Epiphanes in 167 BC, a cruse of sacred oil sufficient for only one day burned for eight days while the priests prepared new oil for the Temple.
