The practice of sounding the shofar dates back to ancient biblical days as recorded in Joshua 6:5 as follows: "Then they are to blow a long blast on the shofar. On hearing the sound of the shofar, all the people are to shout as loudly as they can; and the wall of the city will fall down flat." And let us not forget the admonition "Blow the shofar in Tziyon! Sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all living in the land tremble, for the Day of ADONAI is coming! It's upon us!" from Joel 2:1.
